9+ Book Report Templates & Examples

If there is a compulsory assignment for students in elementary or middle schools, that would be none other than completing book reports. For those who don’t know what a book report is, this is simply a formal essay discussing a book’s contents. Typically, the assignment entails students filling out a form, answering basic questions about the book they were assigned to read. However, sometimes students may be expected to write book reports from scratch rather than simply filling out pre-made forms. In that case, having knowledge of several book report templates can go a long way. These templates are simply the formats used in writing the reports.

It should be noted that, completing a book report assignment serves as proof to the teacher that the learner indeed read the book and, hopefully, acquired some knowledge out of it.

A standard book report entails a few sections that are expected to be filled out by the student. The first sections in the form include, the author’s name, the illustrator’s name (if applicable), and the book’s title. Other sections may require information in paragraph format. These sections include.

  • The setting – i.e where the events of the book occurred such as Paris or any other place.
  • Characters – A list of all characters involved in the book plus their real names.
  • The plot – the basic overview of the events in the book.
  • Your impressions – this section requires your opinion on the book i.e. whether you like it or not, and why.

Book Title: The Guns of Navarone Author: Phill Morris

Mr. Phill Morris is a renowned author from Berlin, Germany. The 33-year old German-Austrian multinational has written a number of historical books, one of which has won several awards globally. His books are on the topic of World War 2, the infamous global battle that lasted between 1939 and 1945.

The events narrated in this interesting history book took place in Germany, the Soviet Union, and Italy, which were some of the countries in Europe that got involved more in the war.

Sgt. Maurice, Captain Pius, President Zulksburry, Dr. Kim, and ambassador Mussolini who are the main characters in this book do not represent real people. These are just fictitious characters whose efforts made a positive impact on the world in one way or another. Though the characters are fictitious, the events reflect those of the real war, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths globally.

Though Guns of Navarone is relatively brief and does not capture World War 2 in full, I like the fact that it’s interesting and does not miss out on the most significant events that took place during the war.

Benefits

The usefulness of a book report cannot be emphasized enough. Here are some of the ways in which the templates can add value to your project:

  • A book report allows you to summarize the ideas of the author, demonstrating to your teacher or tutor that you’ve totally understood what the writer was trying to put across with the book.
  • In addition, a book report allows you to take only the information that’s most vital for you rather than having to focus on every bit of information written in the book.
  • Apart from that, acquainting yourself well with a few book report templates can help you write an outstanding book report, ensuring that you pass your assignment and eventually your exam.
  • Furthermore, book reports are generally very easy to write, despite providing incredible value.
  • Lastly, a book report gives you a better opportunity to express your opinion, regarding a particular book.

What to Do Once You’ve Written the Report

Once you finish writing out your book report, you’ve completed what’s known as the “Rough/First Draft”, which is simply the initial stage of the report. It’s the hardest part of the assignment, though. The next stages involve;

  • Reading through and marking the book report. This allows you to get a feel of the report, identify the spelling and punctuation errors in it.
  • Making edits to the report. This stage entails correcting the spelling, punction, and grammatical mistakes you spotted.
  • Reviewing the report. At this stage, your report is almost complete. What’s left is reviewing it one more time to correct the spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors before printing the document out and handing it over to your teacher.

What is the format for a book report?

While there are several formats available, all formats begin with the title of the book and the name of the author and those of other contributors (if applicable). What’s more, the formats also have a few sections designated for the setting in which the story is based, the characters in the story, the plot of the story, and your opinion regarding the book, in general.

What questions do you ask in a book report?

You don’t ask any questions in a book report. Instead, you answer a few questions such as the book’s title, the author’s name, their contributor(s) names(s) if applicable, the setting for the story, and the characters in the story. Another important question you answer is your opinion, regarding the story and the book in general.

How many pages should a book report be?

According to experts, a book report shouldn’t exceed two double-spaced pages.
